Door alarms are devices which provide ease and sense of security to the person with a memory disorder and for the close one living with him/her. For example spouse can sleep in peace knowing that the door alarm will alert if the person with a memory disorder tries to leave from the house.

Points!

The alarm function varies between devices depending on the manufacturer and models:

  • The door has been opened
  • The door was left open
  • The person has left or entered the room through the door

Door alarm (local alerts)

Door alarm unit placed within the same building alerts with a beep, ringtone or pilot light when the door has been opened.

Door alarm (external alerts)

Makes the alert through the safety phone or base station e.g. to the mobile phone or with a call, text message or application to the alarm center when the door has been opened. The alarm system can also be configured to use a bypass function to enable use of the door without alerts, e.g. for medical staff.

Smart door alarm (external alerts)

The most advanced version is the door alarm which recognizes when the person has actually left the room/house. The system will alert through the safety phone or base station e.g. to the mobile phone or with a phone call to the alarm center. A delay for the alarm can be set to allow the resident to leave for a certain time, e.g. retrieving mail. Continuous peeking out of the door is a known symptom of memory disorders – in these cases smart door alarm solution prevents the false alarms.
